Protein Shakes and Baldness

A lot of men nowadays are highly conscious about how they look. This is why the term metrosexual came about, and that is because of the increasing vanity which has struck the majority of the male population. Trips to the salon, more fashionable clothing, Botox treatments, numerous hours on the gym, and to top it off they take supplements to improve the way their body looks.

What these men don’t know is that the supplements that they are taking, protein shakes in particular, also puts them at risk for excessive hair loss. Protein shakes contains chemicals that can either cause or worsen baldness.
The kind of protein shakes that can cause hair loss are those that are not organic and contains growth hormones. With that content, it increases the DHT (dihydrotestosterone) levels which can cause androgenetic alopecia or male pattern hair loss.

For those who may have not heard about DHT before, let me get you acquainted on how this hormone came to be. We all know that males are equipped with their own set of hormones, and that is most characteristic to them is androgen. This is the very hormone which carries the male characteristics. When the metabolism of androgen comes in contact with an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase and combines with the hormone testosterone is when dihydrotestosterone is formed.
When DHT comes in contact with the hair follicles it causes them to shrink, thin and then shed. The baldness it creates takes a certain pattern, either forming a “U” or an “M.” Since women also have testosterone in their system but in minute amounts, this also causes them to experience female pattern hair loss.

With a lot of men gulping the wrong kind of protein shakes and going to the gym, thinking that this will give them that buff and improved appearance, they are surely in for a disappointing surprise.

If they want to keep that full head of hair intact, they should choose those supplements that are organic and does not have any growth hormones in them and this should reflect on the primary label. One thing however that should not be seen on any label of your protein shake’s ingredients list are the “branch amino acids.” They help promote hair loss.
If you are genetically predisposed to baldness, then it would be best to avoid protein shakes.

Due to the increase in the number of males dependent on protein shakes in order to buff up, there is an increased incidence of bald guys still in their 20’s and 30’s. The kind of diet that people have nowadays is also to blame for men experiencing hair loss at a young age.

Some men may regain their hair when they stop whatever it is they are taking that causes it, while others are unfortunate enough to lose it permanently. Medications, hairpieces and hair implants for men are some of the measures to help restore that full head of hair and confidence.

If you really want to improve the way you look, it is always best to be cautious about what you are taking in. Just because it promises a good outcome doesn’t mean that it is always safe. So for those who are fond of drinking protein shakes or other body-building supplements, make sure that you choose the right brands.
