Beard Hair Transplant FAQ’s

Answers to frequently asked question about beard hair transplant.

1. What is facial or beard hair transplant?

This procedure involves the removal of hair follicles, also referred to as hair grafts, that are genetically resistant to thinning from the back of the head. These hair grafts will then be transplanted to the site where you want the beard to grow.

2. Who are the perfect candidates for beard transplantation?

Aside from those men who are unable to grow a beard, those who have patches of non-hairy areas along the beard or mustache regions also make good candidates. Beard transplantation can also be done on men who have scars on their faces due to burns, incision scars due to surgery or pimple scars. This procedure can be perfect in concealing these problem areas from direct view.

Beard transplant can also be performed on men who prefer a stubbly appearance on their chin or those who want to grow sideburns, but have the kind of facial hair growth that are sparse or scattered. Meanwhile, it can also be done for some men who want to modify the pattern of the beard or mustache. It can also be done simply to de-emphasize or emphasize certain facial features.

3. How painful is this procedure?

This will involve very little discomfort because the surgeon will be able to painlessly perform the procedure under anesthesia.

4. Is their anything that can be done to reduce the risk of scarring?

Unfortunately, there is little that can be done before the procedure to reduce the incidence of scarring. Scarring can only be minimized when proper techniques are employed, something that we at Australian Institute Hair Restoration (AIHR) certainly make sure of.

Also, the skin on the cheek, chin and the temple area will be able to grow hairs without noticeable bumps. The only scars that will result in this procedure will be the one on the donor area, which is found at the back of the head. This will be a single fine line that runs horizontally and is usually undetectable.

5. When will you be able to shave after a beard transplant?

Usually, shaving should be put off for the first ten days up to two weeks after surgery. But, you have to know that this will vary among patients, as assessed by your surgeon. Some patients are able to trim their hair carefully after a week’s time. However, these transplanted hair will simply look like stubble for the first ten days.

6. What is the recuperation process like with facial hair transplant?

After the procedure, you can expect tiny crusts of blood on the area. This will soon change into crusting, which is a sign of the skin starting to heal. This will last for a week, and once these will start to fade, you will then have another week or two to experience the stubble effect. Then afterwards, the transplanted hairs will fall off in a normal process called shock loss. There is no need to worry here because it will simply grow back. Not all transplanted hair will fall, of course. But usually, it is around 70% of the total transplanted grafts.

7. Are the results of a beard transplant permanent?

The result of hair transplantation is permanent. The new hair will grow and will continue to do so for many years to come because the hairs will simply stick to its original characteristic. This means that this type of hair is not sensitive to the balding process.

8. What is the growth rate of this new transplanted hair?

The growth process is more evident in a beard hair transplant compared to what you will notice from a head hair transplant. Usually, you will see significant growth after two month’s time. If you really want to grow your beard long, this can take about 4-6 months.

9. How long does the procedure take?

Depending on the amount of coverage needed, the procedure can take 2-4 hours to complete.

10. How is a natural appearance achieved with a beard hair transplant?

To create a completely natural appearance, the hairs are transplanted in natural follicular units. They are positioned in the direction of facial hair growth. The natural distribution of hair is also taken into consideration. A good hair transplant surgeon understands how every small detail is critical to ensure a natural-looking result.

11. How much does a beard transplant cost?

The price varies and will depend on the level of density that is needed. If you want to have an estimate, you can get a free consultation with the Australian Institute for Hair Restoration (AIHR).
